This apprenticeship course covers all the basic principles you need to learn to become a plant mechanic/​engineer and work with our plant engineering team at Shorts Group Ltd.

You’ll learn how to service and repair machines and equipment, including replacing parts and checking and calibrating instruments. You’ll study basic engineering skills to the latest technological advancements. Your apprenticeship will cover:

• Preparation of machinery for hire.

• Pre-delivery inspection of machinery carried out in accordance with manufacturers and employer procedures.

• Performing routine service and maintenance operations in accordance with manufacturer’s schedules and employer’s instructions.

• The preparation of equipment for repair for example, cleaning, dismantling and reassembly of machinery and their component parts, this may be carried out under supervision or in accordance with procedures or written briefs.

• Conducting routine machine operation and systems testing.

• Handing over machinery plant and equipment to the control and use of others in the workplace. 

These operations typically take place under the supervision of an experienced technician in the workplace. The nature of the job role presents challenges ranging from routine maintenance to the repair of elementary mechanical faults. This requires a diverse blend of skills, industry underpinning knowledge and the disciplines required for environmental and safe working practice.

Entry Requirements:

Assessments inc English and mathematics. 

Service engineers will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of: 

• How to comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling regulations, the abrasive wheel regulations and the legislation relevant to the role of Service Engineer

• The workplace procedures • How to record information, maintain accurate customer service records and communicate with customers and colleagues using verbal and handwritten methods whilst observing customer care practices • Workshop practices, the identification and application of tools and equipment used in service and maintenance operations. • Methods of joining metals and components. This knowledge will be used in the context of performing service and maintenance operations to machinery and equipment. • The operating principles of machinery, plant and equipment. • Underpinning service, maintenance and repair principles and practices, typically including machinery and component conformity procedures, tolerances, pre-load, backlash, component sealing, system bleeding, alignment, balance, calibration, removal of corroded components etc.

• How to access and interpret technical data relating to machinery and equipment service and maintenance operations

• How to handover machinery, plant and equipment to the control and use of others in the workplace

• Emergency First Aid.

You should have a mechanical aptitude and interest, be an excellent problem solving and logical thinker. Must follow instruction 100%, strong attention to detail with a disciplined approach to health and safety and be comfortable with computers.

You must be reliable, honest, enthusiastic, inquisitive, and physically fit. Must be able to stay focused and stick with a task until completion. Must be a team player and an open, honest communicator. You should have a willingness to learn, adapt and ask questions. Finally, you must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather in site environments and within a workshop facility.

At the end of the course you will be expected to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) consisting of a written and practical assessment along with a professional discussion. You’ll spend the periods between college training with your employer, developing work-based skills and knowledge.

The Land-based service engineer is a 22 month course with a 3 month EPA period. Offers are subject to acceptance on this course.
